Why are there different aggregate sizes and what are they used for?
The general rule is to use the largest rock and aggregate size for the application. In fresh concrete, larger aggregates need less water than smaller sizes to achieve the same workability. Grading can also be improved by blending smaller with larger sizes. Doing so increases concrete density and reduces the required cement paste. This gives better concrete structural strength and durability.

What are the characteristics of good quality aggregates?
Cleanliness – Washing removes impurities like clay, silt and excessive rock dust that prevent a good bond between the rock surface and the cement paste.
Shape and texture – Proper crushing produces cubical angular rocks with rough surfaces that promote aggregate interlock and improve concrete strength.
Grading and size – Blended and well-graded aggregates have fewer voids between particles, higher density and compaction, and lower water demand. Proper grading improves workability and lowers the risk of honeycombs and rock pockets that reduce concrete strength and durability.
Strength – Aggregates made from hard mountain rock produce strong and durable concrete.
Low absorption and porosity – Pores absorb water and reduce workability. Permeable rocks are vulnerable to internal cracks and disintegration.
Legally permitted source – Well-managed permits allow investment in crushing and mobile equipment for the reliable supply of consistent quality products.
